Submitted by our JAG student Layla E., we honor Judith Jamison, an iconic dancer, choreographer, and artistic director. As a principal dancer with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, she captivated audiences worldwide with her powerful performances. Later, as the companyâs artistic director, she carried on Aileyâs legacy, mentoring new generations of dancers and expanding opportunities for Black artists in the world of dance.

Beyond acting, Berry has excelled as a producer and entrepreneur, using her platform to advocate for diversity in Hollywood and support causes like domestic violence awareness and diabetes research.

Known for her powerful voice and grace under adversity, Anderson became the first African American to perform at the Metropolitan Opera in 1955. Her historic 1939 concert at the Lincoln Memorial, after being denied a performance at Constitution Hall due to segregation, remains a defining moment in the fight for racial equality in the arts.

Submitted by our JAG student Raphael C., we honor Francis Sumner, the first African American psychologist. Known as the "Father of Black Psychology," Sumner became the first Black person to earn a Ph.D. in psychology in 1920. His groundbreaking work challenged racial biases in psychology and helped pave the way for future Black scholars in the field. His legacy continues to inspire those working to advance mental health and social justice.

Submitted by our JAG student Nazaire P., we honor Robert Lawrence, the first African American astronaut. A skilled Air Force pilot and Ph.D. holder in physical chemistry, Lawrence was selected for the Manned Orbiting Laboratory program in 1967. Though he tragically passed away before going to space, his legacy paved the way for future Black astronauts like Guion Bluford and Mae Jemison.
