Submitted by our JAG student Layla E., we honor Judith Jamison, an iconic dancer, choreographer, and artistic director. As a principal dancer with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, she captivated audiences worldwide with her powerful performances. Later, as the company’s artistic director, she carried on Ailey’s legacy, mentoring new generations of dancers and expanding opportunities for Black artists in the world of dance. Known as the "Father of Black Psychology," Sumner became the first Black person to earn a Ph.D. in psychology in 1920. His groundbreaking work challenged racial biases in psychology and helped pave the way for future Black scholars in the field. His legacy continues to inspire those working to advance mental health and social justice. A skilled Air Force pilot and Ph.D. holder in physical chemistry, Lawrence was selected for the Manned Orbiting Laboratory program in 1967. Though he tragically passed away before going to space, his legacy paved the way for future Black astronauts like Guion Bluford and Mae Jemison.
